A beautiful website is wasted if nobody can find it. Here's how to get your business appearing on Google — in plain English, no jargon.
1. Make sure Google knows you exist
Submit your website to Google Search Console and give it a sitemap. It's free, and it tells Google exactly which pages to crawl. If your site is new, this is the fastest way to get indexed at all.
2. Get the basics right on every page
- A clear, descriptive page title
- A meta description that explains what the page is for
- One main heading that matches what people search for
- Fast loading — Google rewards it and so do your customers
3. Use the words your customers actually type
Don't optimise for “bespoke digital solutions” when your customers search “web designer in Canterbury”. Write naturally, using the phrases real people use when they're looking for what you sell.
4. Claim your Google Business Profile
For a local business this is huge. A free Google Business Profile with your details, opening hours and photographs puts you on the map — literally — when nearby customers search. For local enquiries it often matters more than your website itself.
5. Keep it alive
Google favours sites that stay fresh and useful. Regular updates, genuine reviews and helpful content all build trust over time. Local search is a long game — but unlike a paid advert, it compounds.
